St Joseph's Primary School, Gorey fought off the challenge of 6 other Wexford teams to represent the County in the All Ireland Checkmate Primary School Finals in Limerick in May 2010.

The team members were Alex Byrne, Brandon Byrne, David Hall and Charlie McGuckin. The team achieved a very creditable joint 3rd place out of a total of 16 teams and their top board, Alex Byrne, came 2nd in the individual standings.

At the ChessZ Finals in May 2010, the same team achieved joint 6th place. Again, Alex Byrne distinguished himself by winning all his 5 games and on tie-break he came in 2nd place in the individual standings.

The school has a vibrant chess club which meets weekly. For many years, the pupils have achieved much success in Co. Wexford Primary Schools Competition held annually in Piercestown National School and also in the
Wexford Chess tournaments held in Brandon House Hotel, New Ross.

Congratulations to all the team and their dedicated teacher/coach, Ms Bríd Cleary on their success.
