Sam Collins Simultaneous Exhibition

International Master Sam Collins played a charity simultaneous exhibition in Gorey Chess Club on Saturday, September 7, 2013. The venue was packed to capacity with over 40 players at the boards to start off and a queue of 5 more waiting to play. This massive turnout was due in no small way to Seamus Halpenny’s tireless promoting of the event! In a long afternoon of chess, Sam conceded only 6 draws and was never in any trouble on any board. The 'best game by a junior' prize was awarded to Ross Beatty of St. Benildus who held Sam to a very comfortable draw, while the 'best game overall' was awarded to Gorey player John Lacey who startled Sam with an inspired defence in a seemingly hopeless position. Big, heartfelt thanks to Sam who gave freely of his time and was rewarded by being 2 hours late for the wedding he was due to attend later that day (not his own, we hasten to add!).
