Gorey Success at Irish Championships

Several Gorey players played in the Irish Championships in July with very notable results. Miroslav Gallik scored 4/5 in the Intermediate section to come joint second. He had to hold the winner to a draw in the last round to secure this standing. Martin Brehov scored a creditable 2.5/5 in this section.

Daire Gohery also scored 4/5 in the Junior section which earned him joint second place. His single loss was to the winner of the event. Seamus Halpenny scored a very respectable 3/5. His son John Halpenny only played the first few rounds of this event, and notched up a good win against a much higher-rated opponent.

Well done to everyone! These are excellent results from a small club that doesn’t even have a league team. Perhaps 2013 will see a Gorey Irish Champion?!
